So, what’s wrong with the standard variable rate?

Rates that aren’t fixed are known as Standard Variable Rate mortgages (SVRs). This means that the underlying rate can change as and when either the Bank of England changes the base rate or the lender decides to change their rate packages.

Standard Variable Rate mortgages are on the whole very expensive, ranging from 4% to 5% whereas most fixed rates are currently between 1.5% and 2.5%. At this point you can either do nothing and pay the higher SVR rate or, depending on your circumstances, you could switch to a new deal.
